Should You Pair Young & Old Rabbits? Advice from Alpha Vets
April 16, 2025
Rabbits are social animals that thrive with companionship, but introducing a young rabbit to an older one requires careful consideration. While successful pairings can offer great benefits, they also come with challenges.
If you’re introducing a new pet rabbit to an older pet, read on for tips from Alpha Vets’ nursing team and contact us for advice. They´re always happy to help!
Should you pair young and old rabbits?
Our nurses at Alpha Vets advise that a well-matched pair of rabbits can provide companionship, reduce stress, and encourage natural behaviours like grooming and play.
Whilst pairing rabbits of similar ages can reduce dominance issues, introducing a younger rabbit to an older one can create a lively bond. Older rabbits can also help teach younger ones good social habits. The size of the bunnies need not be a concern, but Alpha Vets’ nursing team advise that both rabbits should be heathy, and males castrated for a smoother bonding process.
Potential challenges
- Energy levels: Young rabbits are often full of energy, which may be overwhelming for an older rabbit who prefers a calmer life.
- Bonding process: All rabbits need careful introductions in a neutral space to avoid territorial behaviour.
- Health concerns: Older rabbits may have underlying health conditions, so any new rabbit should be fully vaccinated and health-checked. Visit our vets at Alpha Vets before introductions.
Making it work
- Gradual introductions: Allow rabbits to see and smell each other before direct contact. Short, supervised meetings can help them adjust.
- Space considerations: Provide enough room for both rabbits to retreat if needed. A bonded pair should always live together but with ample space.
- Monitor behaviour: Look out for signs of aggression or stress and separate if necessary. Some pairs may take longer to bond than others.
