Travelling to Northern Ireland? How to Apply for Your Pet Travel Document (PTD)

With new pet travel rules now in effect, pet owners in England, Scotland and Wales must obtain a Pet Travel Document (PTD) before heading to Northern Ireland. The PTD replaces the previously required Animal Health Certificate for Northern Ireland and is valid for the lifetime of your pet.
In order to travel, you’ll need to make sure you pet’s microchip information is correct – Alpha Vets’ veterinary nurses can help you with this, as well as scanning your pet’s microchip to ensure it’s working correctly – just get in touch. You can then simply apply for your new Pet Travel Document online.
Who needs a PTD?
- Residents of England, Scotland, or Wales
- Owners of dogs, cats, or ferrets – including assistance animals
- Individuals must be over 16 years old
How to apply:
- Create a Government Gateway ID and DEFRA account.
- Provide your pet’s microchip number, breed, colour, sex, and any unique features.
- Submit your application online via GOV.UK.
Once issued, the PTD allows travel without further vet visits or documentation. Rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatment are not required for travel to Northern Ireland under this scheme. However;
- If you are travelling beyond Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland or other EU countries, you will still need an Animal Health Certificate, rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatment – learn more.
- If someone else is travelling with your pet, they must carry the PTD, written approval from you, and sign a declaration at the port or airport.
This update is part of the Windsor Framework and aims to make pet travel more accessible and less bureaucratic for families and pet couriers alike.
