Dietary advice for pet rodents
Molesey Vets’ team love helping small furry pets in Surrey thrive. Check out their dietary tips below that should keep your tiny pets happy and healthy.
1. High-Quality Pellets: Choose a high-quality pellet mix designed for your specific pet. Avoid sugary muesli-style mixes, as they can encourage selective feeding and lead to nutritional imbalances.
2. Fresh Hay: Hay is a must for most rodents, especially chinchillas. It provides essential fibre to support digestion and keeps teeth worn down, preventing overgrowth. Make sure they have unlimited access to hay at all times!
3. Fresh Veggies: Fresh, leafy greens and veggies like carrots, kale, and parsley make great treats. Molesey Vets’ team recommend keeping it varied but avoid giving too much of any one type – remember, moderation is key!
4. Protein Boost: Rats enjoy protein-rich foods, so adding a small portion of cooked eggs or lean meat every now and then can give them the energy they need for their busy days. Gerbils can eat small amounts of protein too, as can hamsters and mice, but the latter two can experience health issues if they have too much. Chinchillas are herbivores and should never eat meat.
5. Hydration is Key: Always ensure your pet rodent has access to fresh water. A water bottle with a metal spout is usually the best option, as it keeps the water clean and reduces spills.
By keeping their diet balanced and varied, Molesey Vets’ team share that you’re not only supporting their health but also helping your pet rodent thrive with all the energy they need for play, exploration, and fun!
