Whether it’s a dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig, getting kids engaged in daily pet care can help them learn responsibility and strengthen their bond with animals. Here are some enjoyable and age-suitable ways for them to join in.

Teaching children to help with family pet care

Cat care: feeding, grooming, and fun activities

Our Molesey Vets’ nursing team explain how cats may seem independent, but they still need care and interaction. Kids can help with:

  • Refilling food and water bowls – A simple but important daily task.
  • Helping with brushing – Some cats love a good groom, and it’s a great bonding activity for your children.
  • Playing with wand toys – Encouraging natural hunting instincts keeps cats active and engaged.

Dog care: walks, playtime, and basic training

Dogs thrive on routine and attention, making them great pets for kids to help with. Children can help with:

  • Dog walking around Surrey – A safe, grassy park can be the perfect opportunity for children to help hold the lead (with adult supervision).
  • Playtime – A game of fetch or hide-and-seek keeps dogs entertained and stimulated.
  • Basic training – Teaching simple commands like ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ is great for both child and pet!

Rabbit care: cleaning, handling, and enrichment

Rabbits need daily care to stay happy and healthy. Our team at Molesey Vets advise that children can help with:

  • Topping up hay and fresh greens – Learning about a rabbit’s diet is a great lesson in pet care.
  • Gently handling them – With supervision, kids can learn how to safely pick up and cuddle their bunny.
  • Setting up tunnels and toys – Encouraging exercise is key to a rabbit’s wellbeing.

Caring for guinea pigs & small furries: feeding and social time

Guinea pigs, hamsters & other small pets need gentle care. Children can help with:

  • Providng fresh vegetables – Teaching kids about healthy diets can start with pet care!
  • Cleaning cages (with help) – Cleaning bedding keeps their habitat fresh.
  • Talking to them – Guinea pigs love a chat, and hamsters enjoy gentle interactions.
