Molesey Vets’ Summer Heat Guide for Exotic Pets

June 16, 2025

When the UK enjoys a burst of sunshine, it’s easy to forget how quickly warm weather can affect our more unusual pets. Molesey Vets’ vet and exotics enthusiast Darren Partridge explains that many exotic species – from reptiles and parrots to small mammals – are especially sensitive to changes in temperature, humidity, and ventilation.

Warm weather tips for exotic pets

Exotic pets need the right conditions to stay comfortable and healthy in summer. Here are Darren’s top tips to help keep them comfortable and safe during warmer months:

  • Keep an eye on enclosure temperatures: Heat can build up quickly in glass tanks or enclosed spaces. Use a reliable thermometer and ensure their basking spot doesn’t overheat.
  • Adjust heat sources if needed: If you keep reptiles, they often need less supplementary heat during summer. Check your vivarium temperatures daily and consider using a thermostat if you don’t already.
  • Ventilation is vital: Proper airflow helps prevent heat stress and keeps humidity levels balanced – essential for many birds and amphibians.
  • Provide shaded areas: Whether it’s a hideaway in a tortoise run or a covered perch for a parrot, Darren says it’s important to make sure your pet can retreat from direct sunlight.
  • Not too much (or too little) sunlight: Some exotic pets, small furries especially, will need their cage or hutch moving out of direct sunlight – ask us for advice. However, rabbits and guinea pigs will need some time in the sunlight/UV rays to help them produce the vitamin D they need.
  • Keep water fresh and accessible: Topping up drinking water regularly is a must. Some species also enjoy misting or bathing, which can help regulate their temperature.
  • Be cautious when travelling: If you’re bringing your pet to our vet practice in East Molesey or taking them to a holiday sitter, never leave them in a parked car, and make sure their carrier is well-ventilated and shaded.
