1. The Cup & Treat Game
What you’ll need:
- A tasty rat-safe snack (try banana or unsalted popcorn)
- 2–3 identical cups or plant pots
- A motivated little rat
Step 1: Let your rat see you place the treat under one of the cups.
Step 2: Gently shuffle the cups around.
Step 3: Give your rat time to sniff out the right one.
Scoring (just for fun!):
- Got it first go? You’ve got a mini mastermind.
- Second try? Still seriously smart.
- Took a bit longer? A thoughtful little problem-solver.

2. The String Challenge
What you’ll need:
- A short piece of string with a treat tied to the end
- A sturdy table or low shelf
- A rat who’s ready to think things through
Step 1: Hang the treat over the edge, just out of reach.
Step 2: Let your rat investigate how to get it.
Step 3: Praise their effort — even if they don’t quite manage!
Scoring:
- Pulled it up straight away? Ingenious.
- Tried different approaches? Clever and persistent.
- Lost interest? Just saving brainpower for later.
3. Tunnel Explorer
What you’ll need:
- A short cardboard tube (wide enough for safe travel)
- A toy or treat
- Your inquisitive rat
Step 1: Set up the tunnel somewhere your rat enjoys exploring.
Step 2: Show them the treat, then place it at the tunnel’s far end.
Step 3: Encourage them to make the journey through.
Scoring (just for fun!):
- Dived right in? Confident and bright.
- Sniffed around then gave it a go? Strategic thinker.
- Took the long way? Clever in their own creative style!
