Below, Darren Partridge has picked their favourite tried-and-tested life hacks from local exotic pet owners and clients at Molesey Vets who share their homes with everything from pet reptiles to rodents.

Make feeding exotic pets easier (and more natural)

  • Frozen feast: Pre-portion frozen insects, veg, or meaty foods into ice cube trays – great for reptiles, ferrets and birds of prey. Pop one out daily for easy, no-fuss feeding.
  • Scatter feeding: Foraging keeps animals like parrots, degus, and chinchillas mentally stimulated. Use cardboard tubes, paper egg boxes or homemade puzzle feeders to make mealtimes more interesting.

Temperature tricks for pet reptiles

  • Thermometer three-pack: One at the warm end, one at the cool end, and one for ambient room temperature helps ensure proper gradients for reptiles and amphibians.
  • Microwaveable heat pads: Handy for short-term warmth during travel or power cuts – just make sure your pet can move away if needed.

Cleaning hacks

  • Old toothbrushes: Brilliant for scrubbing small crevices in vivariums, water bowls and hides – this one is Darren’s favourite tip!
  • White vinegar: A pet-safe cleaner (when well diluted) that’s great for removing limescale and odours in bird cages or tanks.

Handling and bonding tips for exotic pets

  • Glove training: For nervous birds or reptiles, Darren advises wearing the same glove for gentle interaction as this can build trust over time.
  • Clothing comfort: Place a worn t-shirt in your ferret or small mammal’s bedding – your scent can help them feel more secure.

Every pet is unique

Of course, what works for one species (or even one individual!) may not work for another – so keep things tailored and always check that life hacks are safe for your pet. If you’re unsure, Darren Partridge and our exotic vet team in East Molesey are happy to advise – just book an appointment for your exotic pet.
