Indoor fish fun! Ideas for sprucing up their tank

Fish tank enrichment ideas – the do’s

1. Add variety and hiding spots

Different shapes, heights and textures keep your fish engaged. Combine plants, caves and ornaments to create areas for exploration and retreat. Natural driftwood or smooth stones are great for mimicking natural habitats.

2. Think about layout and flow

Good design isn’t just aesthetic – it affects wellbeing. Use tall plants or decorations at the back, leaving open swimming space at the front. Varying the current from your filter can also make swimming more interesting and provide gentle exercise.

3. Include live plants

Our vets at Molesey Vets explain how live plants such as Java fern, Anubias or Elodea improve water quality, offer shelter and give your fish something to interact with. They also create oxygen and help reduce stress.

4. Offer sensory stimulation

Different substrates (sand, gravel or pebbles) and natural décor encourage natural foraging behaviour. Rotating fish tank decoration ideas every few months keeps the environment fresh and prevents boredom. You should be able to find some great decorative elements in pet stores and aquariums around Surrey!

5. Feed creatively

Try using floating or sinking foods in different parts of the tank to promote exploration. Some owners hide treats under pebbles or within plants – a simple way to introduce aquarium enrichment for pet fish.

The don’ts – things to avoid

1. Sharp or rough decorations

Avoid anything with sharp edges that could tear fins or scales.

2. Overcrowding the tank

Too many decorations (or too many fish) reduce swimming space and can cause stress or aggression.

3. Painted or untreated items

Our vets at Molesey Vets remind you to only use ornaments made for aquariums. Household objects, metals or painted items can release toxins into the water.

4. Ignoring water quality

No amount of décor can make up for poor filtration or infrequent water changes. Regular maintenance is the foundation of good fish welfare. A thoughtfully enriched tank makes for healthier, more active fish and a far more interesting display for you to enjoy.

If you’ve discovered creative ways to enhance your aquarium, we’d love for you to share them on our Facebook page for other fish owners to read them.
