Common injuries from falls

  • Fractures and sprains: Due to their delicate bone structure, small pets like guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and rabbits can break bones or sprain limbs from a fall.
  • Soft tissue injuries: A fall can strain muscles or ligaments, leading to pain or restricted movement.
  • Internal injuries: Sometimes, the impact from a fall can cause bruising or internal trauma, especially if it’s from a significant height.

Signs of injury to watch for

  • Limping or reluctance to move: If your pet is limping, dragging a leg, or unwilling to put weight on one side, they may be in pain.
  • Hunched posture or difficulty standing: A small pet who’s unusually hunched or has trouble standing up may have hurt their back or abdomen.
  • Lethargy or lack of appetite: Pets who are injured may be quieter than usual, avoiding interaction or their favourite food.
  • Visible swelling or bruising: Molesey Vets’ team advise you may see visible swelling or bruising after a fall.

What to do after a fall

  1. Keep your pet calm: After a fall, it’s important to reduce any further stress. Gently handle your pet and place them in a quiet, comfortable space.
  2. Check for visible injuries: Look for signs of bleeding, bruising, or abnormal lumps.
  3. Limit movement: Try to keep your pet from moving around too much. If they seem unwilling to move or are limping, they may need rest.
  4. Seek professional care: If your pet shows any signs of serious injury, such as not moving, bleeding, or visible fractures, contact our vets in East Molesey on 0208 979 1384 immediately.

Prevention tips

  1. Secure areas: Ensure your pet’s environment is free from high platforms or places they could fall from.
  2. Soft landing spots: Create soft areas with bedding or blankets to cushion any potential falls.
  3. Safe play zones: When letting your small pet roam, always supervise them, especially in high areas or around furniture.
  4. Gentle handing: Ensure the whole family knows how to handle small pets safely, always keeping them low to the ground or close to a soft surface.

A little extra care goes a long way in preventing and managing falls. If you’re ever unsure, always contact our vets at Molesey Vets for advice and peace of mind.
