Molesey Cats Know What They Want From a Holiday Sitter

May 21, 2024

The ultimate dream vacation for your cat (the one they enjoy while you’re off on yours) involves a live-in butler catering to their every whim, all while they indulge in a delicious fish platter and soak up the sunshine… #CatGoals

Real talk… it’s going to be a friend or family member staying at your house or popping in a few times a day, or a professional pet sitter. That doesn’t mean your cat can’t have almost everything they want though. We surveyed a number of cats (may have been cat owners) in Surrey to find out what they really want from a pet sitter.

What your cat really wants

According to our East Molesey veterinary team’s findings, here are the seven top things your cat would benefit from when you’re away:

  1. Sticking to Usual Meal Times (or as close as possible): This is so your cat knows when to arrive (probably from upstairs) for food. Keeping to their normal routine will reduce potential stress and encourage wanderers to come home at their normal hour.
  2. Fresh Water on Tap: Ensure your cat has a constant supply of their preferred drink – either tap or rainwater is purrfect.
  3. Daily Litter Tray Maintenance: Essential, especially in warmer months, to prevent flies from laying eggs.
  4. Companionship & Snuggles: Offer comfort and reassurance to your cat while their beloved humans are away.
  5. Tailored Play Sessions: Inform the sitter about your cat’s favourite toys and play habits to keep them entertained and mentally engaged.
  6. Wellbeing Checks: Has your cat returned for their dinner? Any signs of discomfort or illness? Notice any injuries, like a nip on their tail from a scuffle? If your pet sitter has concerns, they can reach us on 0208 979 1384.
  7. Vet Care: Give your sitter any current medication and instructions, as well as the details of our vet practice just in case a ‘cat-astrophe’ should occur!

Finding the right cat sitter

Your cat probably reigns supreme in your world, so having someone reliable and experienced looking after their needs while you’re away will give you peace of mind. If you don’t have anyone close you can ask to look after your cat while you’re away, you might be wondering how to choose a good cat sitter in Surrey?

Our East Molesey team recommend checking:

  • References: Can they provide contact details for other pet owners they have worked with?
  • Knowledge: The sitter should be able to spot signs of ill health and be aware of any specific issues. If your cat needs regular medication, they should be capable of administering it.
  • Quality Time: The person should be willing to offer adequate companionship.
  • Insurance: If your pet sitter is a professional, they should be insured so check their documents.

Feel free to call us on 0208 979 1384 if you would like any further advice about ensuring the best holiday care for your cat’s needs, and wants!

And remember to book a cat health check before you go away.
