What’s a PTD? Pet Travel to Northern Ireland Made Easier

The Windsor Framework has ushered in a new era for pet travel between England, Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland. From 4 June 2025, pet owners no longer need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for each trip. Instead, a Pet Travel Document (PTD) is now required.
Our veterinary team at Claygate Vets share that the PTD is a one-time application, valid for your pet’s lifetime, and is free of charge. It eliminates the need for vet appointments per trip and repeated paperwork. You’ll simply need to ensure your pet is microchipped and apply online through the DEFRA portal. This change applies to dogs, cats, ferrets, and assistance animals.
Our vets advise getting your pet’s microchip checked to ensure it’s working as it should be and checking your information is up to date before travelling – incorrect information could put a stop to your travels. Rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatment are not required for travel to Northern Ireland under the PTD scheme. However, if travelling beyond Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland or the EU, these health requirements still apply.
